The Calcutta High Court has dismissed the RGC case filed against former Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, following his written apology to the court for revealing the name of a deceased rape victim. The ruling was delivered on Thursday by a division bench comprising Justice Raja Shekhar Mantha and Justice Ajay Gupta, who accepted Goyal's expression of remorse and clarified intent.
The case stemmed from an incident last year, when Kolkata was shaken by the rape and murder of a young doctor. At the time of the gruesome crime, Vineet Goyal served as the Commissioner of Kolkata Police. During a press conference related to the case, he inadvertently disclosed the victim's name, an action deemed unlawful under Indian law, leading to the registration of a case against him.
In his letter to the court on Thursday, Vineet Goyal conveyed his sincere apology, stating that his intention was never to insult the victim. He clarified his actions with full honesty and stressed the vital need for enhanced training of police officers to prevent such incidents in the future. The High Court, acknowledging his apology and explanation, decided to dismiss the case.
